1870, February 26, NYS Legislature Acts, 1870, July 29, the village votes - Incorporation wins!

Two pages of The Morris Chronicle give some insight into the story of the incorporation of the village of Morris.

The first one from July 27, 1870 has a Notice for an election to resolve the question allowed by the New York State legislature authorizing a vote of the issue of incorporation in an act passed by the legislature on Feb. 26, 1870. The men listed supporting incorporation were mainly businessmen in the proposed village. The text referred to is cut out below. Below that you can see the business directory and compare names. The incorporated village would enclose about 500 acres. A tax of $450 was authorized. The money was spent building wooden sidewalks along Main St. Which would be a benefit to the businesses and the public.

The election was held on Friday July 29, 1870 with 126 votes cast, 94 in favor and 32 opposed. The village of Louisville became incorporated as the village of Morris. See column three of the link to The Morris Chronicle for August 3, 1870. Notices of the election were printed on June 29, July 13, and July 20, and July 27.
