Photo, 1940's Main St., Morris

The Shell gas station must have been new at this time, I would guess this is 1936 -1940 just from the vehicles. Note the SOCONY/Texaco pump still in front of Gage's.

The town looks pretty prosperous. Love the photo!

I love this picture! The town mostly the way it was when I was small.... before buildings started to be torn down. I do not remember the ornate spires on top of the "Naylor" block... when were they removed.... And I don't see the stop light yet!

The traffic signal I think is the white post by the bank corner. A truck driver for either McNitt or the Linn company came back into town late, swung the corner and knocked it over not realizing it was there ,right after it had been installed. (1923?) there also is some kind of white post on Gage's side as well? Anyways, a May 25, 1937 newspaper mentions that Hobe Lull had broke ground on his Shell gas station project on the property he had purchased from the (E. S.) Niles Estate. I think the Mobil station on South Broad & Grove (now Mirabito)was built by Chuck Whitman in 1939?

I love seeing all these old pictures of Morris. It is a great little town. My Dad was a doctor there in the late 30's and early 40's.
