New Lisbon, School District #1, Noblesville

Circa 1915

This school was closed due to lack of students in the fall of 1938. The remaining students rode the bus to Morris Central School.

Written on the page I can read.

Discussion about the school on Facebook

Happy to see this post Gary! We grew up summers 60's and 70's walking to our 'General Store' (Katherine/George) for mail and 'fireballs' (I remember ours was 'Box 52'). Has been depressing to watch it deteriorate. It would be so great to see it brought back as the old school house, general store or just cared for. BTW, also missed is the church across the street (since burned). The Johnson garage up the street, 'New Lisbon General Store' (Demming family) up the road as well as the 'Antique Store' across from the old 'Stafford' house along with the Hayner, Gross, Rock, Williams, Parker other families and Friday auctions at Sheldon's remain fond memories from our summer visits past and present!

I have quite a few photos around of it around 1930 laying around. I'll have to dig them out. It used to be white back when it was a school

Andrew Boynton
Is Roy the Toy Boy still around ? I bet he would !!

Wow. This answers some questions! Thanks.

Kevin J. Dragulski
No problem. I think I have more photos. I also have a page on Noblesville history written circa 1910 that describes the early history of you're interested

Gary Norman
Yes, we would like any information we can find. Thanks.

Hi Gary Norman, at moment I'm not 100% certain but I located online a 1860-ish business map of Noblesville and Stetsonville (both were annexed into New Lisbon at some point. I think the 1860 map indicated that the General Store and Post Office building was originally the Noblesville School House #1 or School House#2. The Demings homestead was the Gartner Hotel, the current Samstein "Antique Shop" building on corner was shown as a stage coach stop in 1860. There is a historical book on Otsego county that indicates Dr. Bassett (namesake of now current day Bassett system), was born across from the General Store in a home no longer existing behind the no longer existing church. New Lisbon/Ron Parker has a very rare book on New Lisbon Township with photos and articles covering some of the former "Noblesville" section of the Township. His book may have some post-1900 photo(s) of the General Store. I remember it had actual photos of Johnson's Repair & Gas Station before Leon Johnson owned it. If you want to try to recreate the feel of that Noblesville section of New Lisbon, give Ron a call. His current strong memory, and that book, will be helpful to you. Hope this is helpful. Ken Bain
was hoping you'd bring it back to my childhood days, so I could share that with my grandchildren

Frank Rock
ABOUT TIME!!!!!!! LOL -It is such a shame how certain people allow older historical buildings to get.......irresponsible as best. So very happy that you are going to rescue this one.

Gary Fisher
Go to Schoolhouse John's Pictorial Collections of 1 room schoolhouses of Otsego County, page #277 shows 3 photos of this school house.

Wonderful photos. They answer some questions I had about the inside of the building. Kevin, could you bring some of these images to the Morris Library so I could scan them at high resolution?

Steve Norman
Is that the wainscot I see in the schoolhouse class photo?

Kevin J. Dragulski
Sure thing. I'm in town most Friday's.

Michael Parsons
Ken Cook had a motion movie of a Rodeo taking place there by State Troopers in the 1930,s ..wonder what ever happen to that movie ? showed the school house perfectly

Gary Norman
Steve Norman Yes, wainscot. The wall in the background is the no longer extant wall between the entrance foyer and the main classroom. It had two doors, as we predicted from the evidence in the floor.
