East Main St circa 1937 - 1941
Photo and comments by Rene Elliott
The Shell gas station must have been new at this time, I would guess this is 1937 -1941 just from the vehicles/license plates. Note the SOCONY/Texaco pump still in front of Gage's.
The traffic signal I think is the white post by the bank corner. A truck driver for either McNitt or the Linn company came back into town late, swung the corner and knocked it over not realizing it was there ,right after it had been installed. (1923?) there also is some kind of white post on Gage's side as well? Anyways, a May25, 1937 newspaper mentions that Hobe Lull had broke ground on his Shell gas station project on the property he had purchased from the (E. S.) Niles Estate. I think the Mobil station on South Broad & Grove (now Mirabito)was built by Chuck Whitman in 1939?
License plates would suggest the year was 1937 (Shell gas station was started in May), 1939, 1941, maybe even 1944? (Many people drove old cars during the war, my Grandfather Elliott had a 1930 Plymouth he dragged out from under a uncle's barn up in Ketchum).
The postcard below had a postmark of 1949.
