A photograph believed to be the work of N. W. Carey was recently shared by Rene Elliott. You can see it in low resolution above or click on the photo to see it in a much higher resolution.

The photograph was longer than the scanner so the right edge is distorted. Another scan putting the right edge on the glass is shown below. You may click on that to see it at full resolution also. The grouping of four children in the photo is neat. The new hill at Hillington Cemetery has some monuments on it.

As you can see the old 1/4 mile track is no longer used for racing. The old grandstand was dismantled. The old track is used to set up the rides and the new track which is 1/2 mile long and has banked curves.

I believe it is in the 1910 fair book. The big elm stump is under black plastic right behind the fish tank in the conservation area. This angle was probably taken from the original judge's stand, looking in the direction of the South Broad Street bridge. If one of the cattle sheds is still standing it is probably the one closest to the race track now. Unfortunately there does not appear to be any fair photos from this point until c. 1923 or later. This is when the new grandstand was built and the old (1898-1923) grandstand was being dismantled, a hundred foot section was sold off the east end to the town for a highway department (later shared with these the crew when they started out) and moved to the corner lot which they leased at that time. The rest of it was salvaged to build sheds, etc.
