West Main St - circa 1941
Photo and comments from Rene Elliott
I'd be tempted to say that's the same Buick approaching in the left hand lane? The reason I bought this off eBay years ago is I believe it is the only image I have seen of the 1926 Republic fire truck that H.H. Linn helped the village acquire, it came a week too late to save the Owner mansion, and was 100' short of hose to save the original Richard Franchot house where Boynton Studios is now after it had arrived. I was told about the last time is was used the driveling broke and they pushed it down to Claudine Stafford's and used the fire extinguishers and hoses to put out a fire? This is the one supposedly traded in and resold to some island nation down in the Caribbean. In this photo it looks like an awning in front of the Grand Union?
Postcards I bought years ago off eBay, note how much nicer the Town House looked with all it's trim, weather vane, etc. they soon found it couldn't handle the weight of two fire trucks. The c. 1926 Republic firetruck supposedly was traded off and ended up being sold to some island in the Caribbean but even Ken Cooke and Bob Klindt could not recall more details than that. That is the truck that had the pressure build under the seat (Aherns Fox had them out front) and when at the fire at Allen's Pond when the one house burnt, it was because someone messed with the pump settings to get more pressure and exploded that pressure tank just as Viggo Klindt walked up to see what the problem was, and he was not happy. In the other photo you can see my father with his 1941 white Super Scout Indian motorcycle.
