I will try to get a better photograph later this year, but this color photograph shows the that sign was multi-color.

If you look at The Morris Chronicle from September 21, 1898 that is linked below in the second column next to SUPPLIES in column one you can see that the sign was painted by A. Avery and hung in September, 1898.
