1965 Wellman Block on Main St, next to the bank

We have Joyce Foote to thank for this photograph of the Wellman Block on Main St in Morris. The building was razed about 1965 to make way for an automatic telephone exchange. Clippings shared by Mary Valentine.

The photo above was supplied by Susan Gaughan Rowe, she wrote, "Found this picture in my mom's albums. She had 1947 written on the back. She worked in the diner for Hap for awhile."

Dana Cooke wrote, "Here's a photo my father took a few months earlier, before the building went down. All these slides are dated either March or May of 1965. (My father was Dick Cooke, son of Ken and Lucy. He worked at Naylor's at the time and these were taken from his 2nd-floor window.)"

The photograph above was in the paper for an article about the new telephone exchange building going in on the Wellman Block site.

The telephone office ended up a bit back further on the lot than the model that was displayed before construction took place.

Seen above is a model, now being shown in the First National Bank lobby, of the Bank, on the left, of the proposed phone company building in the center and of the business block on the right. The structure was designed by Arthur Meggett, architect, and the model was built by Lee Brown Coye.

The Wellman Block may be gone, but the Diner shown in these photos, once known as "Hap's Diner," survives. Susan Gaughan Rowe supplied the copy of Hap's business card.
