Coach Ray Clement
Ray Clement loved to spend free time fishing. He didn't always catch fish -- but he enjoyed his time outdoors. He was a friend to Draper Daniels, a model for Don Draper in the TV series Madman about advertising executives in the late 1950s and 1960s.
Ken Stowell collected Ray's comments about local fishing holes in the booklet he created. Follow the link below to read it.

The obituary on Ray Clement's findagrave page gives a good overview of his life.

The photo above shows the MCS High School Faculty in 1932. Mr. Clement was director of physical education, coach of both men and women's basketball, men's baseball, and also directed a one act play.
The 1933 yearbook only had photos of the seniors. It looks as if most of it was typewritten and reproduced on a mimeograph machine and stapled together by hand, probably due to the pinch of the depression gripping the country. Two railroads placed ads. Mr. Clement coached all the sports from 1932 and football. Morris under Coach Clement hosted a track meet at the fairgrounds in the spring for boys and girls. A 1/2 mile bicycle race was included. Also a potato race and a three legged race. Morris boys placed first and Morris girls second.
In his spare time Mr. Clement along with Miss Phelps and Miss Johnson produced an operetta.

The 1934 yearbook had only one photo, a group shot of the entire senior class. The photo has no caption so you have to guess the names of the seniors in the picture. Mr. Clement coached all his normal sports and started a CLOGGING CLUB! Name another male athletic director who would do that!

The 1935 yearbook has a publication date of July 1935. The book was printed on a press by the New Berlin Gazette Printing Company. Individual photos of seniors appeared in the book. There were no faculty or team photos. Coach Clement directed a one act play. No reports of sports scores were included. The Morris School District still has children attending six one room schools.

In 1936 the typewriter was in use again and the camera was completely untouched. Sketches adorn some pages. Sports records are listed and boxing is introduced -- but only for intramural contests. Winners and losers in each weight class are listed.

Finally another faculty photo in the yearbook. Coach Clement is at the left end of the back row. There were a lot of photos in this yearbook. Individual classes and many activities and even one of Mr. Littlewood with his horse drawn wagon.
The yearbook was dedicated to Dr. Lewis Rutherfurd Morris who passed away on Dec. 9, 1936. Soccer was played instead of the football. The soccer team was bare chested. Makes one wonder how they were able to keep track of individual players.

The girls' softball team uniforms included neckties.
Besides getting into a new sport of touchball Coach Clement organized a variety show and wrote a skit. The girls' basketball season was a success. They won 14 of 17 games, lost 2 and tied 1. However it is noted that this was to be the last year of competition for the girls' basketball team.

In 1939 six man football was tried with great success and an undefeated season. Boys Basketball had their best season also, losing only one game all year. Girls sports were not covered in the yearbook, even though some senior girls were listed as playing basketball and/or softball in their senior year.

1940 saw six man football again, but the other schools must have learned a lot because we were third at the end of the year. In basketball we could only manage second. No girls sports were reported. Mr. and Mrs. Clement chaperoned a costume party at Juna Adams house in October.

The girls have a softball team again. Six man football had a fair season. The boys basketball team was undefeated until sectionals in their lowest scoring game against Fleishmanns, 20-14.

BASKETBALL
It's almost traditional for our coach, Ray Clement, to turn out league champion basketball teams. A total of 700 p0ints were scored during the regular season and of the 14 games played Morris went undefeated. In the first sectional game Morris topped Schenevus (42-28) but lost to Margaretville in the second sectional game (38-30).

The 1946 MCS Yearbook was dedicated to interim athletic director Gordon Hughes. His teams had the most success in baseball.

In 1947 Coach Raymond Clement returned to MCS and the yearbook was dedicated to him. His coaching returned the Morris teams to high places in league standings as was reported in the yearbook.

The JV team had a better record than the varsity in 1952 -- but both teams had the same coach who also became Vice Principal of MCS that school year.
